THOMAS HARDIE PIPER
Piper Hardie wears
the costume introduced by Lieutenant Colonel Lauderdale Maule, served in the
79th from 1835 until 1852, the last ten years in command. The artist is David
Cunliffe. Piper Hardie is the hero of the episode involving two English footmen
at Windsor Castle who mocked his Skye accent when he was appointed piper to
Queen Victoria. "After vainly warning them, he threw off his jacket, and
administered a sound thrashing," which led to his speedy return to the
79th. He was appointed pipe major in 1860, retiring in 1868.
