MY ANCESTORS OCCUPATIONS
The furthest back I have managed to get in my
family tree so far is to a William Hardy, who is recorded on his son James
marriage cert in 1866 as being a Labourer, and on his son Patricks, marriage
cert in 1870 as being a Farm Labourer.
Next is James, who is recorded as being a Iron Foundery Labourer, on his marriage cert.
James occupation changes in 1868 when on his son Charles, birth cert he is recorded as a Ship Builders Carter.
On James son Peter’s birth cert, James is recorded as a Steam Ship Stoker, which means he would be travelling away from home for periods of time and indeed this may be the reason I have been unable to locate him on any of the census records.
From this time on James is recorded as being a Steamship Fireman, on documents right up until his death in 1914 at the age of 68.
This occupation would stay in the family right up until the second world war.
James Hardy’s daughter Catherine, is recorded on the 1881 census as being an Apprentice Steam Loom Weaver, at the age of 14.
Next up is James son Charles, who is recorded on his marriage cert in 1891 as being a Steam Ship Stoker and also on his death cert in 1899.
Patrick Hardy, (James bro) is recorded as being an Engineers Labourer, on his marriage cert in 1870.
His wife Catherine is recorded as a Cotton Yarn Winder.
William Hardie (James son) is recorded as being a Steam Ship Fireman, on his marriage cert in 1901.
Mary Moss (his wife) was a Biscuit Packer.
Patrick Hardie (James son) was recorded as a Steam Ship Fireman, on his marriage cert in 1902.
Margaret
Rankin (his wife) was a Spice
Packer.
Charles son James is down as, House Painter, on his marriage cert
